Soloing Over
Altered Chords
by Ted Vieira
You always want to sound great. You always want to be a great guitar player, and make great music. You want to solo over chord changes as they come at you; playing great lines that fit perfectly over the chords in the progression. Then you come across a chord like G7
9; or a E7
5
9;
or a Bmaj7
5! You want to easily outline and create those types of sounds in your solo as easily as you would a Bm7, or a Dmaj7. That's what this book is here to help you with.
I like to keep things very simple, even when working with complex harmony; such as altered dominant chords. Keeping things simple causes less confusion during performance and allows you to more easily create the music that is within you.
If you're still a little unsure of what an altered dominant chord actually is, it's any dominant 7th, 9th, 11th or 13th chord that has an altered interval, such as a
5, or a
5 or a
9, or a
9 as part of it's construction. For example: E7
9, D9
5, A9
5, etc... These are all altered dominant chords.
In the few pages of this book I'll give you the information that will allow you take one scale, that when used in four different ways, will give you the sounds of ANY altered dominant chord. (and even a couple others!)
The scale I'm referring to is the jazz version of the melodic minor scale, and the arpeggio of that scale. Using that scale and arpeggio, in these four different ways described in this book, you can easily outline the sounds of a dominant chord with any of the following altered extensions:
5,
5,
9 and
9. (and any combination of them!)
Wow! Taking only one type of scale, and using it in four different ways allows you to solo over any altered dominant chord! Talk about keeping things simple! If this still sounds a bit confusing, believe me, it will become very simple to you as you move through the book. If you work with the exercises in this book, along with the accompanying audio CD, you will master this scale and have the ability to easily outline these types of sounds; create this altered dominant tension, the resolve it. This will be a huge step forward for you in your personal ongoing growth as a musician and artist.
Have Fun!
